Why have a portrait made?

There are dozens of occasions that can be a reason to have a professional portrait made.

So why not just go to the portrait studio at the mall?

Sure, they're cheaper. And you get a fine product. A photograph that is technically well executed and affordable. What you're giving up is individuality and the flexibility that makes your professionally made portrait unique.

The photographers at those mall-based portrait studios stand you up against the same backdrop as their hundreds of other customers. They can't move the lights or the camera. They have a standard set of poses for their subjects. In short, your portrait will look just like the customer who came before you, and the one who comes after you. Technically perfect, but ordinary.

Most of the portraits I make are "environmental portraits". That means instead of putting you in front of a cloth or paper backdrop, I'm going to photograph you in the living room of your home, or at your family's favorite park, or the place where you and your spouse first met. It's a much more personal result.
